Dry West Nursery
was founded by David Stiller, a former, long-time resident of western
Montana – another challenging
climate! – but more recently from Colorado’s Front Range. After
nearly 30 years as a successful business-owner, consulting hydrologist,
writer, and university professor, Dave realized that native and climatically-adapted
plants had become almost an obsession. In the process, he tore
up his own yard, as well as those of several friends, to experiment
with native varieties and to learn from the madness. At the
same time, Dave realized that the West’s finite water resources
make native and drought-tolerant plants a unique, spectacular, and
cost-effective alternative to more traditional landscape plants that
require copious amounts of water – and then more water. In
2004, following added training and preparation, Dave and his wife,
Jean, relocated to western Colorado’s North Fork Valley and
began turning the dream into reality.
In 2007, Jean
joined Dave in the active management of the nursery and the business. An
Advanced Master Gardener, Jean is equally prepared to answer questions
or provide advice to the curious or to the serious gardener or
landscaper.
Dave
and Jean are active members in the Colorado Nursery and Greenhouse
Association, an organization made up of like-minded nursery owners
and landscaping professionals, as well as other industry and professional
organizations As
such, they are committed to the industry’s highest standards
and practices.
