Dry West Nursery grows and sells native and
drought-tolerant trees, shrubs, ornamental
grasses, and perennials for landscaping in the Rocky Mountain and
Interior West.
At Dry West Nursery we believe in and
encourage the use of selected native plants to create unusual and
unusually beautiful and sustainable yards, gardens, and landscapes.
We only grow and sell plant species and varieties that meet one
or both of two criteria: they must be adapted and suitable for
thriving in our rugged western environment; and they must be able
to play a superior role in creating beautiful, sustainable, and
water-wise landscapes. To assist in our selection of appropriate
plants, Dry West frequently adopts recommendations by the Colorado
Plant Select and Utah’s Choice programs.
For all its human developments and
aspirations, the West remains a harsh and challenging place in
which to garden and landscape. Most of the region is arid or semiarid,
where annual rain- and snowfall are measured in scant inches. Winter
and summer temperatures differ by more than 100 degrees. Where
the climate is not as dry, as in Colorado’s high mountain
valleys, short growing seasons place their own tough demands on
plants. And if our climate is not challenging enough, climate-induced
stress can weaken poorly-adapted plants to where pests and diseases
flourish and yards fail to inspire. Fortunately, the West is also
home to hundreds of plant varieties already adapted to our climatic
extremes and resistant to indigenous pests. It is these plants
that Dry West wishes to present to the landscaping public.
